A day in my Edinburgh

A city that rewards knowing someone

We would begin with coffee somewhere ordinary and end the evening somewhere you could not have booked yourself.

In between: the closes of the Old Town with a historian who talks like a friend, an afternoon in a collection that is technically closed, and an hour to yourself before dinner because nobody enjoys anything on an empty tank. During the festival I plan differently - fewer shows, better ones, and always a table afterwards.

The last night is usually music. Something small, something local, and no interval speeches.

Three places Alisa will always take you

  • A rehearsal, mid-morning

The hour before an audience arrives is the one worth having.

  • The Burren, on the way to Galway

Limestone, wild flowers and Atlantic light by day. By night, music in a pub with no stage.

  • A dining room in the New Town

Eight seats, no sign on the door, and the best cooking in the city.
