Really well kept castle in the middle of Castletown. A lot of stairs to climb, but views from the top on a sunny day were amazing. Most rooms contain a description of what it used to be used for and some of them are set up with figurines and props to demonstrate. Best moment for me was learning the origins of the House of Keys.
Astonishingly well preserved only a little bit of one of the outer walls isn’t there (well technically it’s been used for the wall of one of the buildings next to the castle. Beautiful views both of and from the castle. Don’t miss the archer shouting who goes there as you enter the keep look right through the slit window.
The chambers that have been decorated do give you a good feel. Interesting to learn that King Robert the Bruce of Scotland had taken the castle at one point, and that the clock was a gift from Elizabeth I of England l.
If you want to experience the true atmosphere of a castle in medieval times then you must visit. The castle is in a lovely small town so there are pubs and restaurants nearby for lunch visits.
